Here is my dumb question...
I am using Mario's .SET file. At least I think its his. He has columns set
up. I can't get rid of them. I tried zeroing the set column dialog, changing
and saving the default master page. I saved setup in all cases, but they
never go away. Everytime I create a page, they are there! How do I get rid
of them?
Here's another...
I am working on a double page document with the settings of 7"x8.5". My first
page is a right page. My second is a right page. When I insert a third page,
the contents of my second page disappears. I end up with my first page still
there and two blank pages following. I am inserting the page after page 2. It
goes *poof*.

Kyle, I just loaded up the files from MARIOSET.LZH. There are no lines in my
layout window. There are no columns set up on screen or in the SET MULTIPLE
COLUMNS dialog. There is nothing on the master page (which is named
'STANDARD'). From the sounds of things, you have a master page containing the
offending guidelines. Look at the CALAMUS.SET file and locate the name of the
".SET" file. Then double-click that file and check the lines following
#MasterPage. You should find "STANDARD" and a number of Grid Parameters set at
zero.
When you are saving a master page, you must name it in the list, select and
save it in the SAVE MASTER PAGE dialog and SAVE SYSTEM SETUP with Style Sheets
selected.
I admit there is some awkwardness in the way Calamus SL saves master pages. It
seems you have to save a master page to disk, and then reload it to make it
take effect. I am still a little puzzled how I did it, but I do have a ton of
different layout styles which can be loaded and applied to any master page I
want. However, when trying to create and save a new master page layout, SL
always reverts back to the layout style of the default master page until I
delete it and replace with one of the new layouts. I know this sounds real
confusing, it is!

My dumb questions for the hour: :^)
Master pages: If I recall correctly, the manual says something to the effect
that text frames should not be positioned in a master page (at least as I
understood it). So, should master pages have guidelines set up, for example,
and the text frames (for each page) can just be positioned with regards to
those guidelines?
Lou, last week I think it was, I posted a series of more dumb questions and I
saw a message from you that said that you were going to write a text file to
answer them and post them. Did you post it and I missed it?
One other question. (I'll let you decide if it's dumb or not. Gee, maybe we
should stop this idiotic thread, BTW. I'm starting to feel more stupid that I
already am. :^) )
The only way to change line spacing (called 'leading' if I'm using the correct
jargon, right?) is with a text ruler? Therefore, if I have alternating lines
with alternating line spaces between each, for example, I must have different
text rulers? Or is there a way to assign line spacing directly to a block of
text without implementing another ruler?
(Hmmm, now that I think about it a little more, using a text ruler really
wouldn't make much difference than marking a block of text, because I'd have
to do either one more than once anyway. Or is there some way I can do it with
a text style??)

Ed, I'll take a stab at the questions.. they're very good ones, not dumb at
all ;-)
The manual says that empty text frames positioned on the master page will not
show up on layout pages. That is why you could not put page numbering on the
master page... the [PG] placeholder was not considered text! BTW, this has
been corrected in the update.
To answer your question... yes, set up your guidelines on the master page if
you wish. However, if you are going to use the same size and placement of text
frames on every page, then create them on page one and use the INSERT EMPTY
PAGES function with COPY LAYOUT from page 1. You should also set up piping on
the first page before adding the additional pages. This way, all frames will
be automatically created, positioned and piped on succeeding pages.
Your second question regarding leading (or line spacing) asks about assigning
a ruler with different line spacing to a text block. Yes, you can do that just
like 1.09N. Set up the parameters you wish (Line Spacing, Paragraph Spacing,
Justification, Absolute or Relative, etc.). Mark the text block. Click the
INSERT RULER icon. You will be asked if you wish to apply the ruler by a MERGE
at the cursor position or by using the BLOCK function. Choose BLOCK.
In the update, the text macros are working so you can set up a series of
different line spacing rulers and apply them by marking text and using the
defined key bindings.
Finally, I believe I did answer your questions last time. Were they in this
topic or in SL (20)? You can check by doing a READ 7 AUT=L.ROCHA1. That way
you will get all the answers I've been giving ;-) If you posted in 20, do READ
20 AUT=L.ROCHA1.
These questions were definitely not dumb... you will no longer be allowed to
post any NDQ's <grin>.

Another Question...
Can someone explain to me why, with the caches active for vector and rastor
frames, I can't see them on the screen. When I turn the caching off, zingo,
they appear, (after a redraw).
Second, has anyone ever had SL jumble a line of text on them? On several
occasions the program has scrambled a chunk of text, yet looking at it in the
editor it is fine and upon sending it back it is okay again. This is strange.
We actually had one slip by us in the current issue of Vortext, so if you care
to see what I'm talking about, go and pick one up. (Shameless, shameless)

Lorne, that's a good idea. I will get to work on it. For others joining this
topic, the 4 disk USER to USER set from ISD is a compilation of the best files
here on GEnie. As Lorne mentioned, some are now obsolete because of the
improvements in the update - like PG_NO_4.ARC (Page Numbering) and
FONT_100.ARC (the Font Size problem). Most of the other TIPS are still
applicable.

I've had text "jumbled" by SL. Lou (I believe it was Lou) said that that
sometimes happens when you edit the text in the frame itself (instead of via
the editor -- PKSWRITE).
So, I was certainly glad when I got up to 4mb so I could use PKSWRITE all the
time.

What's the best way to incorporate blank lines into an area of text, such as
you would find in a contract? Maybe clear the area where a line will be with
a tab, and then use a line frame to draw the line? What about using leader tab
with an underline character? Any other ideas?
(Actually, I finished this already, using the tab idea. It was relatively
easy. But I'd like to hear any other suggestions anyone may have to offer.)

Ed, I find that if you make a macro of hard spaces (shift+space) and assign
the underlined attribute, adjusting the underline weight and offset, this
makes an easy way to slip underlined spaces into a text frame without having
to shift your line frames around everytime there's a text change. Of course,
I'm talking 1.9n, since I don't have SL...yet.

I would like to have text on one line that is justified left, centered, and
justified right. In other words, like this...
Volume 5, Issue 7 News Gazette Page 2
All the text on the same line, but have "Vol..." justified left, "News..."
centered, and "Page..." justified right. I can not accomplish this easily
with text rulers. It seems Calamus doesn't like more than one text ruler per
line. How can I accomplish what I would like?

Dennis, that is a good idea! I am going to try that on SL. Thanks.
Kyle, if you lock each group of words together with hard spaces (SHIFT SPACE)
and use a regular space between the groups; and use a soft return with full
justification, I think it would work. But I agree with Nathan that Tabs are
probably easier.

Oh yeah that old trick, try this; type your line with the following format:
Volume_5,_Issue_7 News_Gazette Page_2 xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ... and make
sure you have the text frame only deep enough for only one line to appear,
this will cause the text to appear with the volume and issue onthe left side,
the title in the centre and the page on the right. if you use this on the
master page and use the insert page number function instead of the page
number then the actual page number will be entered automatically. hope this
was of assistance. (I guess this is a Mario Tip. I actually used this one
years ago with 1.09N)
If this doesnt help than let me know and I will upload a sample. All the best

Mario,
The Justification question came from someone else. They wanted:
Volume One The Begining Page 1
It sounded easy to do full justification and put hard spaces between
the words in the groups and a soft return at the end (forced new line due to
large word. The only problem is I could not get it to full justify, it just
stayed left jusified. I seem to remember this working in 1.09n.
It is not a problem for me (at least yet <grin>) Maybe it just does
not work the same in SL

Lou set me straight today at the office, but the solution still stands. You
can also do this by using a soft return a the end of the line
Full justification will work exactly the same way the only diff is the fact
that you have toclick on the right mouse button to effect any stylistic
changes to the ruler ... a feature I have really come to love.

Ok, I need a "User to User" tip. :-)
Printer Drivers........ I have a Panasonic KX-P1524 which emulates an Epson
LQ-1500. However if I use the LQ driver from SL (360 x 360) it doesn't feed
properly. I get extra amounts of feed between lines which cause blank spaces.
Now if I go and use the LQ driver from 1.09N (180 x 180) it works fine.
Maybe I've got something set wrong in my Dip switches, because if I use the
Panasonic driver from 1.09N and try to do 360 x 360 the same thing happens,
but if I just use 180 x 180 it's fine.
The printer prints fine with every other program I have using either a
Panasonic, or Epson driver so I hesitate changing my DIP switches and risking
messing up everything else.
I've looked at the Printer Generator, but let's just say the instructions
that came with it aren't very good. They are fine if you already know what
it's saying, but to a layman like myself I haven't a clue as to what to
change.
Help! :-)

All,
I will try Mario's suggestion. Sounds okey dokey to me. Thanx!
I am making a newsletter and I have a problem of getting the reference to
next/previous page function to work.
My article starts on page 1 and flows to page 6. I used flow frame to frame
so the overflow from frame one has somewhere to go. At the bottom of the
frame on page one, I type "Continued on page [reference next page indicator]."
On page 6, at the top of the frame, I type, "Continued from page [reference
previous page indicator]." When I do a reformat document, the statements turn
out to read "Continued on page ???." and "Continued from page ???."
Should I have also used the flow to next page function in addition to the flow
frame to frame function? Is that true for using flow from previous page too?
Or do I really need them since I manually flowed frame to frame myself?
Do the reference to next/previous page indicators need to be in a
header/footer frame? Can they be in regular text frames?
Thanx!

Kyle, it sounds like you are having the problem with page numbering because
you did not select a style in the PAGE NUMBERING function first. The fact that
you are getting Page ??? indicates that the placeholders are working properly.
Your second question- yes, you can use the next/previous page indicators in
regular text frames. They do not have to be in a header footer frame. BTW, all
page numbering functions are working on the master page in the update.

Lou, Mario,
I appreciate anything you can do for me on the 360 x 360 printer problem.
The driver (Epson_lq.cdt) only works at 360 x 360, so it "shouldn't" be
optimized for 180 x 180. For now I'm using the EPSONLQ.CPD driver from 1.09n,
but that one only goes to 360 x 180 (or vice-versa), as well as 180 x 180
(what I normally use). Hmmm you know I don't recall what happens with that
driver when I try to go 360 x 180, I'll give it a try and let you know.
Now if I had the printer generator compatible source code for the old 1.09n
EPSONLQ.CPD driver I might be able to figure out what's going on and configure
it to also allow 360 x 360. If the newer EPSON_LQ.CDT from SL allowed
anything but 360 x 360 I might be able to figure it out also.
Sorry to take so long to reply to your quick offers of help. Aladdin gagged

Mario,
They did release the printer source code for the new LQ driver with the
Printer Generator archive here. Now if I just had the printer source code for
the old LQ driver from the 1.09n package to compare it to I probably could
have figured out how to adjust the new one (or the old one) to do 360 x 360
properly on my printer. :-)
Basically this is a plea to Nathan to release and printer sources that
didn't come with the Printer Generator archive, and to also try and get all of

Actually what I should do is just go buy a BJ-10E if I want 360 x 360. :-)

DMC,
I got my upgrade and I have a few reports.
A terrible thing happened with my old SL and I don't want to find out if it
will happen to the new.
I was working on my newsletter with automatic save on for every 15 minutes.
My CDK was somewhere close to 500k. It did an automatic save and I was ready
to quit. I exited SL and turned the computer off. When the Mount module came
in, I was ready to printout the newsletter and see how it looked. I went to
load the document only to find it was 0 bytes long! A whole weekend's worth
of work gone!!
The only thing I can figure is that I knew my hard drive was close to maxing
out on hard drive space and SL didn't recognize that fact. When it went to
save and didn't have space, instead of alerting me there was no space, it
saved it 0 bytes long. I think the disk full error checking routine needs to
be checked so things like this don't happen. I started over this weekend and
I am back in business. I am not using automatic save.
Here is a problem with my update. It's snap to frame and guideline functions
do not work as well as the old version. For some reason, it snaps with a
slight offset. All my offset readings are set to 0. It does not snap right on
the line or another frame. And those two functions were among my most heavily
used. Sometimes, when I adjust a frame, the snap functions don't even
work!?!?
Problem three: I have made my newsletter in magazine format with pages that

Now if I can get those pages mounted onto legal size paper! :-)
I was just curious if DMC keeps track of how many features a decked out

[DMC, hit up David@Toad Computers to move on over to Calamus. I just received

I just tried to save a large file on a full partition and got a DISK FULL

had opened a new file but had not finished saving it when you quit the
program. Did Calamus return you to its desktop and did you do a regular QUIT?
BTW, what happened to your BAK file?

Hmmm, I checked these functions and aside from the appearance on screen, all
SNAP to GUIDELINE and MAGNETIC FRAMES functions are working accurately and
print perfectly. In Actual View, the frames did not appear to touch the right

I did not save with backup. I had SL save every 15 minutes for me. It was on
automatic save. When you saved with a disk full, was it you doing it manually
or was SL doing it automatic? The automatic save it was failed me. I did get
the QUIT dialog box. I didn't quit immediately after it saved.

Well, when I zoom so close that my face is right on the page and don't see the
lines snapped together, I assume that SL is giving me a WYSIWYG result. If it
prints differently than what it looks like even when my face is right on the
paper, then that seems to be a new problem. My old version appeared to be
snapped right on the line even at 1:1. Trust me, I use those functions to
death.

Now that is really silly. :-( You get a lot more paper to work with in legal
and the newsletter comes out looking more like a minature magazine than a
pamphlet. Mount is not a very smart module, is it? I figured that you would
be able to mount pages of different sizes and by using automatic orientation,
it could figure what the best way to fit the pages on the paper you're using.
If you didn't like what it picked, you could manually set the orientation.
When it comes to printing, Mount could just multiply the width of what your
printing by two, IF PAGE_WIDTH + PAGE_WIDTH > PAPER_LENGTH THEN PRINT "Sorry,
your paper is not large enough." How come they only gave us one size for U.S.
users? Now, if I can't find this other paper, I just lost $50. I would never
make a newsletter in letter size when I can get more space using legal. ho
hum... maybe something will show in the future.

Mine happened when I got a "Not Enough Memory" message _DURING_ the save

Mario, your spellchecker works very well and has LOTS of entries. I can't wait

Kyle, I used the Automatic Save to a full partition and got the correct DISK
FULL alert message. BTW, it doesn't take any longer to save with a BAK file
but it does take more space, obviously.
Yes, there may be a problem if the SNAP does not show as true WYSIWYG. I
wonder if this has something to do with the new screen rasterization feature?
I will check this out.
On the MOUNT module, agreed. I raised the same concerns when I first started
beta-testing and writing the docs but I also posted these limitations and I
believe it was covered in the mailout. While it may not do what you want for
this project, I am sure you will find uses for it in future ones. And don't
forget that this module *can* be upgraded to include other features and sizes.
Let's hope that happens.
Harry, thanks for the note. "Not Enough Memory" indicates a different
problem... we'll have to keep track of this phenomena. BTW, might you have
encountered this during the early days when we were just learning about System
Memory in the System Parameters module?

DMC,
I have another problem. Since Mount won't do what I want, I was going to do
it all manually by refeeding sheets of paper and printing page by page.
My first page is a right hand page, but when I print in landscape, it prints
on the left hand side of the paper. This is vice versa for the left hand
pages. I have to print in landscape orientation in order for the pages to
print correctly. Is there a way to get my right pages to print on the right
hand side of the paper and my left hand pages to print on the left hand side
of the paper, not the other way around like it is doing?
If it would work, I can print page 1 (it would then be on the right side like
the cover of a book is) and I could refeed the sheet and print page 16, a left
hand page and the last page of the document. The whole printed paper would
look like it should.

I take that back. They are all printing on the left hand size of the paper,

I am trying to avoid all the pain of having to sit there and tape together a
newsletter at the copier.
All I want is to print my 16 page newsletter, where each page is 7"x8.5", onto
a legal size sheet with two pages per sheet. I want it all to print with page
one being on the right side, so you can read like a normal magazine or book.
How can I achieve this with the options I have under SL?

I think a 0 size file will occur if the program opens a file to be written
to and then doesn't close it when finished. This may happen if you turn the
system off during a save or something else like a crash takes place. I'm not
sure about this but when I was debugging a program I forgot to Close a file
and the file had a 0 length. I would think the file is actually being written
to the disk but the data containing size and location are being skipped.
I would suggest saving before you quit always.

Kyle, the very best way to do this is to paste up individual master pages in
the order you want.
However, if you want to do this job on your printer... enlarge your layout to
legal size but keep your actual working document at half-legal. Set up left
and right half guidelines; group frames and snap them to the proper position;
and print one page at a time, feeding its "partner" back in to print the other
side. For example, set up page one on the right half of the legal page and
print. Put the paper back in. Set up page 16 on the left side and print.
The other method is to group the contents of each half-page and then move it
to its proper position on the legal layout. This avoids reprinting each page
but also means you may have problems with page numbering and piping chains.

Hi Lou and all.... just started looking into the index and footnote functions
of SL. Since I don't have the update as yet, perhaps these questions are all
answered in the later version. Anyway, here goes.
1) The manual says (pg# 10 of the text module 5.6, lower paragraph) that SL
will use a superscript number to indicate a footnote in the text. I find this
NOT to be the case. A normal size number is used. Indeed, it SHOULD be a
superscript number since the normal size is missleading and confusing, not to
mention a pain to go and change by hand. (for any more than two footnotes
that is <grin>)
2) When doing index's, I get no indication of the page numbers in the index
frames...i.e. along with each entry in the index. I did catch some mention of
a similar problem from someone recently, but at least they got ??? for the
number. I get nothing. I think I followed the manual's instructions. Went
over it several times. HUH???
I'm trying to use these functions on a small doc. of 12 pages. Working on the
TT030.
Please advise.
Thanks much.

Kyle,
I would suggest the same method as Lou's second method...with a variation or
two.
Make a dupelicate of your original doc. (save as 'version2.cdk) to try this
with.
Then, go through the doc and cut all the piping chains so that whatever text
is in a frame is free and clear and 'on it's own'. Same for page numbers, etc.
Next, draw up a raster frame the size of one of your pages...what were
they????....5 by 7.5??? Make this frame with No outline and no fill...in
other words, just an empty, invisible frame. Position it so that it covers
exactly one page. Copy it to the clipboard so that you can paste it in to
every page.
Now go page by page and select ALL and group everything on the page. Each
group should be the same size, ie. your single page size.
Next, create a new doc of the legal size you wish to print, with the number of
blank pages you will need to hold all your original pages, counting two
oringinals per new page. Cut and paste with the clipboard from your grouped
frame doc. to the new doc. Save often!!!
If your new legal size doc. has a master page with appropriate guide lines,
you can snap the group frames into the right places. If not, (the way I do
it...) just figure out and type in the x,y for each grouped frame.
The only problem that might arise with this method (that I've encountered
anyway) is that if you have rotated text and/or graphics frames that extend
beyond the size of the blank raster frame that is holding your group. This
of course would give you a larger (ie. off the page) than normal group frame.
In this case, it just takes some carefull measuring, and a bit of additional
math to place the group for printing.
It works pretty well. I've had to do it seveal times now.
Sounds like the Mount Module is not tooooo bright! Like Lou says...'perhaps'
it will get an education! I don't have it in hand yet, but did buy it also.
Calamus users give the best support I've ever seen....if you know what I mean.

I have another question. How come when I insert a ruler in the middle of a
text box and redefine the left margin, only the word wrapping adjusts to the
new margin? If I move in the left margin, the first sentence of every
paragraph sticks to the edge of the text box, not the left margin. I have to
set a tab right next to the left margin and insert a <tab> in front of the
first word after a <CR> so I don't have sentences hanging beyond my left
margin. Argh!

Kyle, I think you missed something on the margins and indents. In the text
ruler there are TWO flags. The black one is the margin and the white one is
the paragraph indent. It is the latter that you also need to move in your
case. Without moving it to the right of the left margin flag, you do get a
"hanging indent". BTW, I presume you already know that you must click the
right mouse button to reformat the paragraph. This was not mentioned in the
manual but should be in the update's README under Manual Corrections.

What is different about your way of entering text into a frame than

Frank, I don't know what I did! Really. But I have not been able to replicate
it in a couple of months now. In the early days of using SL, the text frame
would "lock" and not allow any onscreen editing or export to the text editor.
Perhaps it has something to do with the System Parameters (I used to fool
around with that a lot). Perhaps it was the Text Style module whose awesome
power I have just begun to fully realize now that I am working in color on a
TT030/8.
When I first experienced this text frame lock, I would create a new text
frame, pipe the new frame to the old ones and sometimes everything worked fine
again. Other times this did not work. I really can't tell you why but it
happens no more or why it happened before. Sorry, there is no secret to share

Ice Cream,
Thanx for the tip! Here's the SCOOP on what I did.
1. Changed the document to a single page document with legal size paper in
landscape orientation.
2. Drew guidelines that I would using to snap grouped frames to.
3. Grouped all frames on pages that needed to be adjusted.
4. Turn on the snap to guideline. The pages that need to be adjusted fell
into place.
Lastly, I had to adjust my Page 2+ master page. Doing it this way also helped
when it came to reformatting the document. All the page holders kept the
proper pages. Oh yes, I printed all the odd number pages, re-fed them into
the printer, and then printed all the even.
I still have not tried using the sort Up and Down arrows in the print dialog
box. I remember in the old version, it did not work properly.
I need it because the DeskJet drops the product in reverse order, so I need
Sl to print in reverse order so everything comes out in order.
Piece of cake, right?

Cliff, I was in the same boat until two weeks ago. Since I got my TT and color
monitor, my appreciation and understanding of SL has grown immensely. The
whole area of color rasterization and color separation MUST be seen in order
to be understood.
On a similar note, I chatted with Mario yesterday about the Calamus SL classes
in Glendale. It sure sounds like the "students" learned a lot and left very
satisfied. I know a couple of them are regular GEnie folks so I would like to
invite them to leave their comments, in the hopes of continuing to improve
this part of customer support.
Regarding an earlier request for uploading of the Glendale handout, I think
Nathan would likely agree but everyone should know that there are several
places in the handout where a "Mario" provided key instruction/information.
Nevertheless, it is my opinion that most folks would find some useful info in
the package. BTW, the CDK prints to a 24 page letter size booklet that looks
really neat off the Ultre Setter!
Pages 1 to 4 contain "Marionotes" on layout and design. Pages 5 to 14 contain
the Beginner tutorials on Basic Elements, Text Styles and Layout Tools. Page
15 and 16 contain more Marionotes on Color Systems, Color Sep and
Rasterization. Pages 17-22 contain the Advanced tutorials on Text Styles and
Layout Tools. In the last two pages Mario has included a good bibliography for
design, dtp and color work.

Mike V. or Lou,
I got the quotes working okay inside and outside of PKS, but the Em-Dash is
still giving me a problem. I have the "Built-in Macro Keys" setting for Em-
Dash as "#(superscript)3". The PKS Macro works, but in the layout area it
gives me a regular hypen. Can ayone help?

SL/PKS Macro Update (i.e. My life with macros)
I've been playing some more with the macro and discovered a few things. The
Em-Dash works like a charm if the "built-in macros" setting is "#-" (not the
superscripted 3) that is shown. The other thing is that the Hard spaces (e.g.
Cntrl-#1) do not work in PKS (as stated) and are not listed in the built in
HELP file for PKS macros ([L][HELP]). Can anyone confirm this (or deny it-- i
have been wrong before), 'cause it's driving me nuts. I never really got into
the macro before (other than a few common ones) but now i want them all.

Jim, you are correct that the Built-In Macro Keys binding for the Em-dash
should be '#-'.
'hard space' is as shown on the printed template Nathan sent with the updates:
[left Shift][Space Bar]. Where the template lists 'Show Space', it should read
'Fixed Space'. The preset fractional Em-spaces listed for the Layout Module do
not apply in PKS. Thus the [C]#1-4 and [C]#0 have no use in PKS. Instead, PKS
allows you to set your fractional Em-space to EXACTLY the width needed.
'Fixed space' - [Control][Space Bar] used in PKS will invoke a dialogue box
asking you what fraction (in 1,000ths of an Em space!) you want to insert as
your space. Each 'Fixed Space', no matter how large or small it may be, is
shown in PKS as a grayed-out '>> <<'.
'Hard Space' works the same in PKS as it does in Layout, producing a
nonadjustable full Em-space. Hard Space is [left Shift][Space Bar].
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE... do not rely on the [L][Hlp] onscreen help file. None
of the 'm-code' macros appear in that list (because I couldn't figure a way to
make them appear). Print out my MACRO MASTER template and rely on that while
you commit these 150 or so macros to memory.

Mike, Stephen: Great work on the new lists. One question though, isn't the
'hard space' equal to a 'thin' (word) space not an em as you stated? And is
there a way to set up an 'en' (numeral) space as well as an em simultaneously?
I've gotta update my topic list so I can check out the PKS topic...

Dennis - For all I know, the 'hard space' may actually be a Foobar Space in
width. I'm learning the jargon as I go along. I haven't found anything yet in
SL or PKS that specifically produces an en-space.
Jim - it wasn't. I'd had [C][Spc] 'Show Space' listed in the template, but
hadn't paid any attention to what it did. Your question drove me to check it
out in PKS and dicover that the dialog box lists it as 'Fixed Space' and that
it is user-settable from 1/1000 Em on up. Didn't have any idea that the macro
worked in PKS as well as in the layout window until you asked the question.

I'm not sure if this has been covered but just in case, here goes.
While using the MOUNT module and creating large booklets, I have found that
the original text file is enlarged to incredible amounts of saved CDK's.
What I have been doing is proofing the pamphlet page by page, then saving the
file when done. A text file inported into a blank booklet turns a 60k text
file into a 500k document. So I did some research and found that formating
information was being saved. This information on the page layout just eats
up disk storage and ram. For example;
A 79,764 file size becomes 205548. A 102,946 file size becomes 246,614 and,
To correct this 'enlarging' of the document I pose this solution. First if
you are 'flowing' the text file into the mulitiple pages of a doument, go to
the first page of each flow, and open the text editor, Alt+T and enter a
space charater (or whatever) and then backspace it out and then reflow it to
the page. Now save the file and you should have saved a considerable amount
of space. Go to each first text frame (in case of documents with multilple
text flows and repeat.
If you do this, you should be able to save incredible amounts of space. All
the formating information can be restored by paging through the document.
Hope this helps those with large files.
Thanks, Al Davis

Hello! I finally figured out how to use the round table section of aladdin!!!
Okay, now I get to ask all the questions that have been nagging me since I
unwrapped my copy of Calamus S at the end of December!!!
1) page numbers. I downloaded the "PG_NO_4.ARC" and it told me that master
frames could not hold empty text frames and that page# holders were not
considered text. A message from Lou Rocha on Aug 14, 1992 (four months before
I ordered Calamus S) said this problem had been fixed, but not only does page
numbering not (seem to) work in my S, but I can't get ANYTHING BUT GUIDELINES
to be integrated into master pages. So, my question is: HOW DO I CREATE A
MASTER PAGE?
2) Spaces. I used to use spaces to create wonderful titles in 1.09N. I'd
put spaces between the letters in a word of the title, and justify the text.
The result would be evenly spaced letters filling the whole line. When I try
this in S I get randomly spaced letters. What gives?
Also, concerning this upgrade, and my own upgrade to SL from S, do I have to
upgrade to SL to get my master pages to work properly? And is the upgrade
price from S to SL still $125 CDN?

Doug, welcome to the Calamus area! The page numbering and guideline functions
all work properly. I just checked my copy of Calamus S to be sure. Let's try
this step by step.
Page Numbering
o Go to the Master Page and draw a small text frame.
o In PKS or in the Text Module, click the icon for Insert Current
Page Number (see 5.6.1.1)
o Go to the Page Module and click Select Page Number Style [5.4.1.4]
then insert your starting number and page range.
o Go back to the layout window and you should see the page number
display on each page.
For Master Pages
o First go to the master page (click the icon in the top row)
o Now go to the Master Page Command Group and click CREATE MASTER
Page and enter a name.
o Now install your guidelines and all the frames (rasters, lines,
etc) you need. You may also install text frames for page numbering
and other control codes.
o Click LOAD/SAVE Master Page icon, select the MP you just created and
then click SAVE. Now enter a FILENAME.CSS in the selector.
Let us know how you do. If something doesn't work, please post a step-by-step
account so we can isolate the problem.

Primetime,
Just a guess, but spaces are not spaces. There are different
kinds. Spaces between letters are not all the same size as they
are in a typewriter. Could it be your spaces from 1.09 did not
import as the same kind you had in 1.09? Maybe you are using a
different font?
Anyway the answer to your question is to increase the
inter-character spacing using the feature in Calamus not by adding
spaces.

Exactly Joe. Character spacing and word spacing are user configurable in both
Calamus 1.09N and Calamus SL. This is done by adjusting those settings in the
respective text ruler. The effects are very flexible. When discussing actual
spaces, remember that kerning is built into fonts and then added/subtracted
based on the text ruler governing that text.

Ciao,
Doug (PRIMETIME)
PS-I left a post with basically the same question in the SL category.
Sorry for the semi-redundancy.
Okay. I did exactly as you instructed, Lou. I went to the mater page menu,
clicked on "create master page", created the text frame, put in the page
number, set "Select Page Number Style", saved my master page.
I didn't know if it worked cuz all I had was my original page.
I stuck in 9 blank pages using the new master page. Nothing was on them. I
set page number again, from page 1 to 10, then reformatted from page 1 to 10.
Still nothing.
I've also tried creating master pages with simple lines on them, and
nothing.
Just to see if I understand this, let me try to explain it to you.
1) click on "create master page" in the master page menu.
2) stick all the elements I want in the master page on my present page.
3) save the master page.
Right?
Thanks, again,

Joe,
No. I used the exact same font and size. When I imported. I ended up
trying to re-do the effect, to no avail. It's like SL randomly determines
spaces between words in a justified line! As I entered each letter separated
from the rest by a soft space, each should be treated as a separate word and
they should have come out evenly spaced.
I realize I could have done this with character spacing, but why go through
all the trouble of guessing which spacing would give me the perfect results
when Calamus should do it for me all by itself (as 1.09N did)?
Lou, could you fill me in a bit more on the kerning aspect. Specifically, how
do SL and 1.09N deal with kerning differently in justified lines?

ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 20:45 EDT
Almost Doug. I think you did not ASSIGN the new master page to your original.
Let me explain it this way.
When you CREATE NEW DOCUMENT, the default master page that SL loads is
assigned to the first page in your new document. When you add pages to a
document, you can select the master page or copy the layout from a range of
pages.
When you create a new master page, you have to assign it to specific pages in
your document (which are still 'controlled' by the original master page).
You can do this manually or using the icon for ASSIGN MASTER PAGE. AFter you
have created a new master page, go to the layout window. Now click the mp
icon. The current mp will be highlighted. Click one of the other mp names and
it will be applied to the layout window.
If you still can't get this right, please upload your CDK to Library 43. Just
describe the file as TEST for DMC - Lib 43.
Here's another thought. Perhaps you have inadvertently turned OFF your Master
Page display? Check in the Frame Display Command Group [5.5.5.2].

Message 105 Thu Apr 15, 1993
ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 20:58 EDT
Doug, they don't deal with kerning differently. Kerning is internal to the
characters in a font. Better fonts also have special kernings for certain
pairs of letters... like the new Berthold fonts. I was making the point that
the spaces between each word can be different size because the word spacing
for a particular text ruler or the type of justification will add/subtract to
the natural size of the space character. You could also manually kern more or
less space on each side of a space character.

Lou,
I have been doing that. <sigh> I assign the master page to one page, to
several pages, to all pages... nothing changes. The thing is, I don't think
I'm CREATING my master pages properly.
Doug7,
I really don't HAVE a nickname. Everyone calls me "Doug". Go figure. I
use the alais "Primetime", however. It's based on a bad habit I used to have
of calling BBSes during prime-time (big bucks). I was very quickly cured of

Lou, again,
I tried it again. I seem to be genetically incapable of creating a master
page. I load pages that I DLed from GEnie, and assigned them to pages, but I
simply CANNOT figure out HOW to CREATE one of those buggers!
Let me outline a typical attempt.
I want to create a master page so that I can have the same swooping arrow on
every page.
1. I get the settings all ready in the line module.
2. I go the page module, go to the master page sub-menu.
2.5 (I may click "create new master page" here)
3. I draw my frame with the arrow. Perfect.
3.5 (I may click "create new master page here, if I didn't before)
4. I save the new master page to disk.
5. I assign the master page to blank pages of my document.
6. I check the other pages of my document. They are blank! No arrow
7. I smash my head against the kayboard and load up Drachen.
What's not working???

Doug, if it helps, you are not the only person to have encountered this
oversight. The manual is not perfect (by a long shot <grin>) but in this case
I can say you had the problem because the information about the Master Page
icon is found in the section about the Top Row [5.1.1] in the Standard
Elements chapter [5.0].
BTW, have you downloaded the USER file for master pages?
Regarding the manual... during the 16 months we worked on it, we all tried to
read it with a 'fresh eye' as a completely new user might. Sometimes we made
the mistake of anticipating that the user had read _all_ previous related
material. Such was the case in this matter. If you find other items that are
not clear, PLEASE post your observations here. Whether you are right or not,
it is valuable for us to know where we need to do some tidying and rewriting.
For example, the Text Ruler Command Group does not properly describe the click
and drag method for moving tabs and flags in a text ruler. This was a complete
oversight. On the other hand the System Parameters chapter [5.11] and the Text
Style Command Group have been vastly expanded in USER to USER files and that
information will be incorporated if and when we do a new manual.
In the upcoming newsletter I have written a column with a number of tips. I
have also compiled 5 new USER disks which will be available to help you and
others. This makes 9 disks in total and I highly recommend them if you are a
new user. When printed, these 9 disks will fill a 3 inch 3-ring binder! In
addition, many of the USER files have data files that are useful... color
lists, master page layouts, dictionary, etc.

Thanks Lou that worked great. But ya know, I tried it that way before and it
would work. Hmmm. These late nights can sure get to ya.
I downloaded your Aladdin manual but had trouble printing it out. I loaded it
into SL then turned it into a double page document.
I then printed out the odd pages and everything was O.K. After flipping my
paper and starting to print the even pages it went haywire.
Well not haywire, but it printed page #2 on the back of page #1. It then
ejected page #3 and printed page #4 on the back of page #5 and so on.
I haven't had the time to mess with it anymore since the night that I
downloaded it. I'm using a 4 meg 1040 STe with an Adspeed STe (Sure wish that
I'd here from Jim Allen. Sent him GEnie mail too and no responce.) And my
printer is an HP Deskjst 500.

Glenn, the Aladdin manual is a 1.09N file and should print very easily without
going to SL. When you did load it into SL, did you MERGE or LOAD? Since it was
a single page layout in 1.09N, I don't know why it would become a double page
in SL.... Oh! You turned it into a double. Hmmm.... that should have worked.

I d/l the Aladin CDK manual the other day and printed it. There are 20 pages
in the statistics menu but only 12 pages had anything in them. The rest of the
pages printed with just the page number and ALADIN QUICK TOUR frame at the
bottom (pgs 13-20).
Is my file missing something or was this done for a reason?

Dan, thanks for the kudos :-)
Looks like the raster generator one is going to be even bigger. I'm still in
the late research/testing stages, but things are coming together nicely. I
have discovered some amazing things :-)
Anyone -
Is it worthwhile to include a LDW spreadsheet? Does anyone here ever use LDW?
What the sheet does is automatically calculate - for any DPI/LPI/LPCM/screen
angle combination - the maximum number of color steps (grays or color) and
lists the correct values to use for each available step (among other things).
I just don't know if it is worth the inclusion. Right now the sheet alone is
about 310k big! Any thoughts?

I, for one, would appreciate and use the LDW spreadsheet for raster

Barring that, I'd appreciate F-Mail, but the library seems more logical to me.

From a downloaders perspective, I'd suggest what Sam Stephens has done, make

OK guys, thats what I'll do - seperate package with readme instructions for
those who want it. I just optimized it considerably, and it now packs down to
about 80k without text file. Expect the whole thing in about 2 weeks, barring
any more disasters.
Matt - you don't have to be a spreadsheet 'power user' to use this 'sheet. I'm
certainly not - I learned as I went :-) I tried to make the interface very
simple to use. But if you want to play with some of LDW's more powerful
functions, there are quite a few buried in there. You will DEFINITELY learn
about SL's functions!
Nathan - I just uploaded a beta copy of the sheet to lib 43. I would
appreciate your thoughts on this _before_ I release this :-) If nothing else -
it will help lay to rest a LOT of confusion out here about _what_ RasGen does.

I'm having a dickens of a time getting the same results that Orca did in his
Spreadum.LZH :-(. I'm using LDW Power 1.1 and saving an .LDP to file.
1. First off, I'm not being presented with the dialog box he shows on page 4
of his tipsheet. This is apparently fouling up my ascii import since I'm
getting blocks of the spreadsheet separated from each other, kinda like tiling
gone awry (sp? heh, mispelling's awry too).
2. Perhaps my rulers are off, my columns aren't lining up like it seems they
should.
3. I've read the sticky tabs U2U as well and so far haven't had any success.
I was planning to put the results of our market surveys into a Calamus report
so I'm quite motivated to establish a routine path between LDW and SL!

matt.... on yer item 1., ...it sounds like you are not getting the dialog for
the ascii import, right? Ok, look in the Modules folder for the ASCI.SET file
and delete it. That's right, just toss the sucker! Then re-start SL and try
it again. You'll see the dialog this time and can resave your choices to a
new ASCI.SET file if you wish, or (my way) just live without one and -always-
have the dialog come up. That way you can adapt the asci import to the
current needs.

** Nathan, would you consider offering a deal whereas you would print and ship
us say 4-5 pages of Personal Promotional Materials, which would be anything
the user could use for personal promotions. If the price could be kept to
reasonable (I don't know what kind of trouble using the Lino machine entails)
it would provide those of us who would like to promote ourselves with a sample

By golly, I was printing out the U2U files from the last set of disks that
came with an upgrade.
To my dismay, there are 2 fonts required, ARROW.CFN & STYLDUM.CFN are the
names I believe, used in 2 of them that are not included on the disks.
I did a search of the lib files and could not find them. At least I think I
entered the search keywords correctly. The great and wonderful Aladdin manual
is of no value here!
Are the fonts in the lib, and does anyone know the file #'s? I'm going to try

These "missing" fonts can be a great annoyance as I, a relatively new arrival
in Calamus SL land, know. As I tried to print out my User-to- User help files,
I found that I didn't even have the Trium set of fonts which are usually used.
So I used this and that (usually something from the font collection in the
Calamus Font Editor set. But as for dingbats ... well you get used to U-2-Us
with odd holes and frames which need pushing around before you get a passable
copy. I understand the need to protect and support professional font
designers (I've worked with some in my pre-computer days and am filled with
respect for their skill and artfullness). But that still doesn't explain the
User to User files and the fonts which clearly their authors assume you all
have. Trouble is when they bought their SL some time ago, these fonts (true?)
were included in the price of admission. More frustrating yet, I received my
SL with these Trim, etc fonts on "my" discs -- but they were not coded to
match my serial number. Now, since I'm not one of those swashbucklers who take
fonts and wash them clean of these serial numbers (or whatever it it they do --
I don't want to know and I don't want to play those games), I sit hhere, as I
suppose you now do, looking at these User-2-User files I bought and then to
those SL discs I bought with those files of fonts which I'm told I didn't buy.
Somehow this could be better. But I love Calamus and I'll be ordering a bunch
of "real" professional fonts this month ... but not that Trim set, et al,
those I'll just look at on my original discs .. and remember them when I read
my User-2-User printouts which are kinda overlapping a bit and kinda
mishmashed in fonts and speckled with odd ink dropings where dingbats were
intended to reside. I have called DMC about this and have been told either a)
you were too late to get those fonts included or b) we'll send you some of
them. Based on what I've seen in my post box, I think a) is the winner.
Tough.

HELP! I'm not sure if this is the place to be posting this... but the name of

I'm trying to get high quality hardcopy color laser output of some old low rez
Degas Elite graphics. To date, I have had to convert them to .TIF format for
output through Quark ala Mac. (Calamus SL ordered and on the way, but not
here yet.)
The output has been tiny, (2.5x4 in) and all but the primary colors are either
pixelated or seem to be made up of wavy patterns of two colors which if mixed,
might be close to the original, desired color.
I had asked over in the DTV topic, hoping perhaps getting the graphics to
videotape might be of some help. It was suggested I might need to get them to
film. A positive, which I could then enlarge at will.
Ultimately I would like to see some of the files at poster size, or printed to
silk/cloth.
Any help is welcome.

Thanks, that's what I thought the outcome would be. My thought was to maybe

Possible?

Matt, there are tricks you can do when scanning that will increase
optimization. If you are going to print a final at 300 dpi and scan at, say
1200, your image will be 400% larger when optimized for printing. You can use
Pantone colors with the Brush module to colorizing.

I think that Vectorising the graphic will yield better results than relying on

Calamus SL/S. This little bundle of joy weighs in at 1.7 megs
(decompressed), and is spread over 4 archives:
RG_U2U_1.ZIP #29815 *
RG_U2U_2.ZIP #29814 RASM_LDW.LZH #29812
RG_U2U_3.ZIP #29813
The first three archives contain the main tutorial and auxiliary
files. (All three RG_U2U_x files are necessary to use the tutorial):
RASGEN_1.CDK\ The main 71 page tutorial with sections on
RASGEN_2.CDK - halftone theory, using gradients, RasGen theory and
RASGEN_3.CDK/ math, Calamus 1.09n, hands-on tutorials, a grand
tour, etc. Includes 34 pages of related tables.
K_TABLE2.CDK - Updated printer/screen halftone & grayscale test
sheets with all 256 possible gray shades listed &
shown. For testing RasGen settings (2 pages).
K_ALL256.CFT - All 256 K (black) color-list file.
ULTRE .CDT - DMC's Ultre imagesetter job "dummy" printer driver.
22 resolutions, ranging from 400 to 3000 dpi!
RG_STORY.TXT - The newly discovered "Ancient History of Essell"
from the North Sea scrolls (tongue-in-cheek).
IMPORTNT.CDK - Last minute information/test for the 7/93 release
of RasGen. Please print and read this CDK before
attempting the main tutorial! (1 page)
READ_1ST.TXT - Accompanying text file for this U2U package.
*
Calamus SL/S users who also own the LDW POWER 2.0 spreadsheet
program might be interested in the OPTIONAL 4th archive,
RASM_LDW.LZH. This package contains "K:tell RASTaMATIC" RasGen
simulator spreadsheet. Although not necessary to understand the
main U2U, this file is handy for visualizing and predicting the
results of various RasGen settings. In fact, this 'sheet was
initially developed to test theory and math during the research
phase, and later was used to create the actual tables used in the
tutorial. No text file or instructions are included as the 'sheet is
pretty much self-explanatory. Again, you must have LDW POWER and the
main U2U to enjoy this little ditty :-)
Obtaining the entire package makes for a fairly large download
(343k), but I think you'll find it _more_ than worth the trouble :-)
Toodles!

Ladies and gentlemen, the Raster Generator files created by Doug Walter are by
far the most technical and well written of any that have been approved for
release. Doug's work in this area is of publishable quality and is worth the
look even if you don't have immediate need for high resolution printing. His
tour of raster fundamentals is a natural extension to the Fundamentals chapter
of your Calamus SL manual. I am sure you will all enjoy his work and learn a
lot in the process!

Vectorizing sounds good, from what little I know of it. If you'll pardon the
ignorance, will vectorizing change the color palette in any way? Do I need to
vectorize in grey scale, then re-color?
It wouldn't be a problem, just need to know what to do and how!

Matt - I see what you mean. There are quite a few graphic conversion programs
in the Software Library. One of them should be able to convert your DEGAS
pictures into some format the Mac recognizes. All graphic utilities are in
Library 28. Just use option 8 to select Library 28, and then use option 3 to

Matt - There is really not much you can do other than just enlarging the
thing, then spend a lot of time smoothing the lines and cleaning! I've done
that with some bit mapped graphics I needed larger but still usable. Very time
consuming, but slightly easier than creating it from scratch, depending on
your drawing ability. Converting to a raster graphic is also a slim
possibility, depending on the amount/type of detail, but that is not simple
either. Good luck.

There are some screen printers tricks that I use to help hide the jaggies when

I really haven't gotten as far as to imagine the size of the cloth. Some of
the graphics will do very nicely as scarves. (2.5 or 3 ft.sq) Perhaps larger.
There are two I'd like to blow up to maybe 5 or 6 feet for a wall hanging.
(At that size, I will no doubt have no choice but to spend mucho time fixing,
or simply re-draw.)
I figure I'll see _if_ I can get them to a workable size, then deal with the
details. I have an old friend whose father owns a textile mill. If I'm very,
very lucky I might be able to get them to use one or two and actually weave a

REALM (Joey),
Yeah, I thought I might be stretching it a bit (no pun intended!) with a low
rez Degas pic. The main graphic I'm working on now is mostly a few solid
color fields, (one is approx. 2/3 the picture) defined by some abstract black
lines. I would think the autotrace-> vector route do-able.
OK, so which programs can I do that with ? In color?
Today, I had a bit of a breakthrough. Scanned the 2.5x4 inch color laser
hardcopy into PhotoShop. I will be able to redraw/recolor it there, but the
file size!!! Lucky we had an extra cart near by.
File size at that size was 3.69 megs. Greater than 24 megs when I enlarged it
to 5x7. WOW. All from a 32K Degas file.
I started to recolor using Pantone colors today. I guess I'll see if I get a
good hardcopy _that_ way, (and small), then worry about enlarging it.
For some reason, Photoshop wouldn't read the TIF file from my Mac disk. I
could get it recognized in Quark, but not PhotoS. That's why we scanned it
in.
I'll try to get more time on the Mac tomorrow.

Nathan,
Yes, he rather sounded like he knew where of he spoke! If you see above, I
did get some time with it in Photoshop today. I guess I'll first see how
clean I can get the output, then worry about size. (If I can clean it up
once...)

MATT, I think Nathan mentioned something about color auto tracing in the
near future? Could be wrong but I believe it's an Upgrade for Speedline. You
could use Speedline by saving each color seperate and tracing each one
individually. Save all 16 frames as a Postscript file. A Vector file will
stay it's initial size no matter what you do to it. Since vectors are based
on X,Y coordinates they're not effected by streching and such, unlike Pixel
Images.

Hello all!
Well, I had the time today and installed Calamus SL. So far it looks pretty
nice. I do have one problem though. I'm using a loaner 1040 STe while my 4
meg system is in for upgrades, and even when I boot with a clean system
(supboot.prg, desktop.inf) then run DATAlite, this 2 meg machine just doesn't
seem to have the RAM to run with more than one or two Calamus modules.
Sysinfo reports free ST RAM at 1627K.
So you might guess I've been doing a lot of deleting and reloading of mods.
(even with VM running and 5+ megs free on partition) I guess I could set up
macros to do this for me? At least until I get my machine back.
Is it OK to say, set CSL to load with frame and text mods, create DOC and
frames, save doc, then delete frame and enter text with text editor? or PKS
Write? Then continue to save/delete/load the doc and various mods as I need
them? Is there a recommended config. for using machines with less than 4
megs?
It took some time to figure out the work around, but so far... I Like It!
All help welcome, and thanks,

Matt, you can set up the macro using the Macro Recorder function. Turn it on
with ALT ESC then step through the process of deleting modules one at a time.
When finished, use ALT ESC to end the recording session. Assign any unused
keybinding for this macro. Now use another recording sessions to reload your
modules and assign a different keybinding.
Regarding your second question... what are you trying to do?

Good question, Lou! All I'm trying to do is get Calamus SL to load and run.
I think I've got it though. Since the machine I'm using (a loaner) has only 2
megs, I've set SL to load only a few modules to start. Then, as I complete
each part of the doc, I delete and load what I need. Not quite as handy as if
I had lot's of RAM. To get the Frame, Text and Text Style mods to load on
bootup, I have to boot from a floppy, with only the Supboot.prg in AUTO. Then
run DATAlite from floppy and set the cache to 4K and reboot. That's the only
way I've found to run SL and have more than one small mod loaded.
Until I get my machine back, with it's 4 megs, I will forget about running it
with Warp9, SilkMouse, or NeoDesk, not to mention Geneva! Man, I'm starting to
see why my Mac friends are always screeming for more RAM! (most of them are
graphic artists)
Thanks again, and by all means, keep those hints and tips rolling in!

and you are at the minimum (as if you didn't know <grin>). Stephen Samuels
suggested a new feature... the ability to boot different setups from a number
of CALAMUS.SET files... that emulates Superboot or Deskmanager. I sure hope it
gets done for users with your kind of problem. In the meantime you are doing
the only thing possible by loading and removing modules as you need them.

I tried to output a simple page, one text frame and one line of copy.
Loaded the BJ_10e driver (that's what I have), hit print. I get the right
window, but the page is set to A5 and none of the arrows to change page size
are working. AND... no output.
This afternoon I will be re-reading the manual to see what I missed. Even
though I changed the page size to US standard letter in the page mod, the

>.... ability to boot from different CALAMUS.SET files...<
This would be nice! I do something like that with my DATAlite.SYS file.
Because I need to boot from a _very_ clean system to run Calamus with any
efficiency, I keep Datalite (prg & sys) files on the boot floppy. The
DATAlite cache is set to less than 10, just enough to allow acces to the
drives. This way, when I boot for Calamus, I first run a boot with MouseBoot
to clear all AUTO prgs and ACCs. Then I re-boot from the floppy and voila!
That's the only way I've found so far to keep from altering the cache set up
in DL on the HD. I did it once, and it was a bear trying to get things back.
The cache was at 3k, with no GEM caches at all. What a mess, but I was able
to load and use many SL mods.
Ya' know... the more I work with it, the less I mind waiting for it to change
mods, etc. I'm still enthralled by the VM!
If I could only get it to printout on my BJ 10ex!
Take care,
Matt

Matt:
There is something you can try to improve the quality of the Degas images but
you have to go out of the computer for part of it. It could probably be done
with a computer if you had the right equipment, if not you could do the
following.
Take a printout to a good quality copy machine, enlarge the image to about
8x10, re-touch the image manualy with pencils, chalk or pen and then scan the
image. The higher the scan rez the larger or better the quality.
If the images arn't too complicated you can scan them with Speedline and them
export them to Outline Art where you can add raster fills (very time
consuming) and end up with a vector graphic that might give you what you want.
Even if you don't vectorize the images, the process will increase the quality
of your image. Adding shades with a bitmapped drawing program could hide some
of the imperfections with the different sprays and fills available (including
those you can create yourself).
It's all a lot of work, but if these are images that you just can't live
without it might be worth a shot. You can also change the backround and alter
the images (smooth out some jaggies etc) while you are playing with the hard
copy.

OK, I've got the _team_ on it now!
Lou and Nathan,
Thanks for the reply. The dips on the Canon are set for 11 inch paper and for
BJ 130e mode. In 10ex mode the printer gave me nothing but symbols on paper
(lots of ?'s and aL?'s) and continual error beeps) I was able to get some
print out in 130e mode. Roughly A5 sheet size. (approx. 4 5/8 x 7 3/4 inches)
Left and right page were highlighted and Automatic chosen. I got most of the
graphic but none of the copy at the top. (it was printed in landscape!) Until
I grouped all frames, I kept getting the no frames visible msg. What didn't I
do?
When I set it to portrait, I got most of the copy. (cut off left edge) The
printout was roughly 5.5 x 7.75 in. Missing more than the usual 1/4 inch
edge, I'd say.
Re: page size: So I get the Frame and Page mods installed. Set page size in
the Page mod, then create new doc and text frame. Save doc. Juggle the mods
until I have copy on the page as I like it. Save doc. I then exit out of CSL,
and re-ran it. Loaded in the doc (with Style and Page mods loaded) and went
to print. Printer screen still says A5 paper size. Still won't let me adjust
via the buttons in the print screen. I did try to load another BJ driver. It
was for a 24 pin so I didn't use it, but while at the print screen _it_ read
the proper page size, and (I think) let me adjust it.
I imagine it must be something I'm doing/not doing, but I'm still in the dark
about it. Paper size gadgets aren't working in the print screen.
Also, must I have loaded, when I go to print, all of the mods used in a
particular doc? Can I get away with just having the Style and Text mods
loaded?
While these are certainly a novices questions, I am gaining quite an education
just reading the manual.
Thanks for your help and patience, hope you don't mind my being a pain!

Mr. Blackburn, (Steve)
Thanks for the input! I hadn't thought of that route. At the monent I have
scanned the mediocre laser print into Photoshop and am recoloring with Pantone
palette. This, I hope will at least get me non-pixelated color fields on next
printout.
The problem of size, I think will call for vectorizing. So far, the 300 dpi
scan (color) is 3.69 megs. When I increase the size in photoshop to full
legal size, (8 1/2 x 11) it jumps up to 24+ megs! I'm working on a friends
spare syquest cart so I can store it, but I'm affraid to think of how long it
would take, and how much it would cost to print out that file at the printers.
(Remember, the orig. Degas pic, converted to TIFF, printed out at only 2.5 x 5
inches)
Next, I'll try to see if I can't somehow get the 32k orig. tiff (converted
from Degas) into PhotoShop directly. That should help filesize. If I can
recolor and resize there... I'm in!
If my current attempts fail, I will most likely try yours out.
Thanks again,

Actually, if Matt is going to vectorize the graphic with SpeedLine, he may as
well do it with the original pic. The vector graphic will be smaller in byte
size and can be stretched to the desired page size as he wishes. From there
the Vector Editor could be used to touch up or colorize as needed.
Matt, do you want to upload those graphics to Library 43 and I will try to
SpeedLine them for you?
Regarding your printing problem, you don't have to have any modules loaded
while printing. The print function is in the File menu.. it is not part of a
module. Oops, technical correction... if you were doing color separation you
would need the Color Sep. module loaded. This is not the case for your job.
In the Print Document dialog box you should see the word 'Letter' on the Paper
Size: line (3rd from top). If not, click the arrows beside it until you do.
The alert for No Frame visible means that Calamus is finding frames with their
contents display turned off. Check in the Frame module Display Command
Group... the last one... to see that all frame types are turned on.
It sounds to me like you are running out of RAM. After you have saved your
document drop all modules and print. If it is wrong, reset your System Memory
to 8192 bytes and print. If that doesn't work, turn on the Virtual Memory and
have a cup of coffee (it could take a while). If that doesn't work, upload the
file to library 30 with a note to me or Nathan in the file description. It is
possible that you have some components that are causing your problem. If you
are using PD fonts, include them in the upload.
Just a thought... do you have a _lot_ of grouped frames? These can often slow
things down considerably. Do a Select All and ungroup everything before
printing.
